New responsible gaming code launched in Barcelona
The recent EiG conference held in Barcelona was chosen as the venue for the launch of the new eCOGRA, GamCare and the Remote Gambling Association’s (RGA) responsible gambling code – an initiative to set a minimum set of standards for the global gaming industry, including online bingo.
The idea behind the new code is to enhance protection for players throughout the industry. Many jurisdictions around the world already provide comprehensive sets of standards, but the new code is hoped to provide greater clarity in the pursuit of responsible gaming throughout the global industry.
The code has taken several months to draft and is mainly based on RGA’s existing social responsibility code. The free online bingo industry and existing online bingo halls are expected to generally endorse the new code. While already operating in the well regulated environment provided in the UK, the British online bingo community is expected to welcome the new code at a time when the UK government’s ‘white list’ goes into effect.
Commenting on the new code, Andrew Poole, Managing Director of GamCare Trade Services, said: “GamCare hopes that the adoption of this code will better enable the gambling public to make informed decisions with regards to their remote gambling participation, secure in the knowledge that operators are required by condition of licence to protect the welfare and enjoyment of their customers.”
RGA’s CEO Clive Hawkswood joined Poole’s comments saying: “The promotion of responsible gambling and the adoption of appropriate safeguards are fundamental to the long term success of the online gambling industry. As the industry develops it will inevitably come to be regulated in more jurisdictions. In those places and others where regulation is already being developed I would commend this code to them. It is based on the best industry experience and practice and, more importantly, the expertise of GamCare.
