Casino fires 400 managers

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

MGM Mirage Inc, the biggest casino operator in Las Vegas, has fired more than 400 middle management employees as part of a cost-cutting scheme.

The move has been triggered by the downturn in the U.S economy and the decision will save the company $75 million.

“We were able to see the signs of trouble on the economic horizon last August,” said Alan Feldman, spokesman for MGM Mirage Inc.

“The economy was beginning to worsen and clearly was not going to get better in the immediate term.”

As a result, guests seem to be much more frugal and careful with their money once they come to the resorts. (more…)

Casino War Game Rules

Monday, April 14th, 2008

If you think you don’t know how to play Casino War, then you’re wrong. You most likely played it many times as a kid and it’s one of the easiest casino card games to learn.

Casino War is one of a few new breed casino games to become more and more popular over the past few years. And here at Jackpot we’ve been trying to work out why and still don’t have an answer for you! If we were to describe Casino War with one word it would be BORING!
Take an old children’s game, put it on a blackjack table, dress it up with a dodgy proposition bet, and you’ve got yourself Casino War, one of the newest and most pointless table games ever invented by man!
You make a wager, usually £1-£5. The dealer gives you one card face up and gives himself one card up. If your card is higher than the dealer’s card, you win. If it’s not, you lose, it’s that simple. The casino has absolutely no advantage on this portion of the game and, as you might imagine, the battles or wars are about as interesting. If you like playing rocks-paper-scissors for kicks, Casino War could be your game.
Casino War also includes a tie bet which pays 10-1 and has an almost unreal 18.65% advantage for the house. At all costs ignore this bet!

Casino War House Advantage

Go to war on ties: 2.88%
Surrender on ties: 3.7%
Bet on ties: 18.65%
If your initial altercation with the dealer results in a tie, you may either surrender your bet or go to war, in which case you must post another bet equal to your first. The dealer will then post a chip, this looks like he’s matching your second bet. He isn’t, he is simply matching your first bet. So in reality you’re betting two chips to win one every time you go to war. This is where the online casino really gets its house edge.
The best strategy is to never surrender always go to war. Surrendering gives the casino a big 3.7% advantage. Going to war reduces this to a more realistic 2.88%. And a quick reminder, never ever take the tie proposition!

For Beginners: Skill or Luck?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

There are two main types of casino games - casino games of luck and casino games of skill.
Some types of casino games require knowledge of the game (skill) and luck in order for the game outcome to be favourable to the player. Blackjack for example is one such game. Other casino games such as slot machines require absolutely no knowledge or skill whatsoever and rely totally on that thing that we all know and love, luck.
The only sure thing about luck is that it will change.
Bret Harte (1836 - 1902)

Veteran and professional gamblers tend only to play casino games that have a small house edge. Whereas novice players tend to play a range of games blissfully unaware of the house’s edge and its inevitable advantage.

We’ve compiled a list of some popular casino games below and categorised them as either ‘Skill’ based or ‘Luck’ based. (more…)

Gambling Legends – Charles Wells

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Charles Wells, born in 1841, was a tubby, extravagant cockney and is one of the most famous gamblers in history. He is said to be the inspiration behind the song “The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo” by Fred Gilbert. He enjoyed the high-life in London his feats had awarded him and spent his money frivolously. Legend has it that whenever he walked into a nightclub, the band would immediately begin playing “The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo”.
In 1981, Wells went to Monte Carlo and wrote himself into history. Although he funded himself with money he had defrauded from investors with claims of fake inventions, Wells turned around £4000 into 1 million francs on roulette. He had broke the bank an astonishing 12 times. Even though private detectives were hired to find out Well’s system, on another trip later that year, he made a further 1 million francs in the space of 3 days. (more…)

US authorities don’t know how to apply internet gambling laws!!!!!

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Federal Reserve and Treasury officials in Washington have admitted they are finding it hard to implement rules to underpin the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act 2006 (UIGEA) that effectively banned online gambling in the U.S.

The bill made it illegal for banks to process transactions from online gaming companies and led to catastrophic results for companies such as PartyGaming and Sportingbet and their departure from the U.S market.

Now the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department are responsible for drawing up the laws that will implement the act.

“That is something we’re really struggling with,” said Louise Roseman, director of reserve bank operations and payment systems at the Federal Reserve. (more…)

Barney Frank seeks to weaken gambling ban

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Congressmen Barney Frank, the loudest critic of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has introduced a bill with Ron Paul that will weaken the authorities’ ability to enforce a ban on online gambling.

The bill, H.R 5767, targets the financial aspect of UIGEA, and according to Frank, “will forbid the secretary of the Treasury and the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System from proposing, prescribing or implementing any regulation that requires the financial services industry to identify and block internet gambling transactions”.

The Federal Reserve and Treasury officials in Washington have openly admitted that have already found it difficult to draw up regulations that underpin the UIGEA.

“That is something we’re really struggling with,” said Louise Roseman, director of reserve bank operations and payment systems at the Federal Reserve.

Frank once again reiterated his dismay at the UIGEA.

“I want to get it (UIGEA) undone,” said Frank.

“If an adult in this country, with his or her own money, wants to engage in an activity that harms no one, how dare we prohibit it? Adults are entitled to do with their own money what they want.”

888 Expecting 30% Growth?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Online gaming firm 888 is optimistic of 30 percent revenue growth this year, helped by a better-than-expected start from its new sports betting and bingo sites.

“Current run rate indicates 20 percent (overall revenue growth), and we are bullish on pushing this. Do I think 30 percent is too much? No, I don’t think 30 is too much,” Chief Executive Gigi Levy said in a telephone interview with media sources. Levy added that the firm’s new bingo and sports betting Web sites were seeing strong growth.

“Bingo is doing dramatically above anything we expected. The run rate is currently where we expected to get to by the end of the year, it’s that good.”

“Sports was only launched a few weeks ago, and already last week we had hundreds of new sign-ups every day.” (more…)

eCogra Survey for Internet Poker

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

According to this survey the typical Internet poker player was likely to (% Internet
poker players):

• Be male (73.8%)
• Be aged 26-35 (26.9%)
• Play 2 to 3 times per week (26.8%)
• Have played for 2 to 3 years (23.6%) • Play for between 1 to 2 hours per session (33.3%) • Play one (24.1%) or two (24%) tables at a time
• Consider the monthly bonus (30.8%) to be the most important factor in deciding where
to play
• Play both cash games and tournaments (34%)
• Play at big-blind (minimum stake) levels of $0.50 to $2.00 (61.2%)
• Play with 6-10% of their bankroll at a table at anyone time (23%)
• Use the chat facility but not very often (37.8%)
• Claim that they are “average” in terms of skill level
• Feel that there is slightly more skill involved in poker than luck (31.9%)

Men were significantly more likely than women to play Internet poker (almost 3:1 in favour of men), and were significantly more likely to be younger players. Men were also more motivated to gamble online for financial reasons when playing poker, and for excitement, and women reported higher levels of motivation for social reasons or avoidance measures (e.g. boredom and taking their minds off other things). This is largely consistent with gender differences and motivations for casino play as discussed above. Men are also more likely to play more frequently, for longer periods of time, with more of their money at the table, at higher stakes tables and play more than one table at a time than women. eCogra Gambling Survey: MEDIA SUMMARY in brief

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

The emergence of online gambling has been one of the most significant and controversial developments in the gaming and wagering fields over the past two decades. Though clearly economically substantial, little is factually known about this sector, its customers, and its social and economic impacts. Even more than with other forms of gambling, policy decisions regarding online gambling have been made based on presumptions or prejudices, rather than on facts and scientific findings.

Survey Method

Data for the quantitative investigation was collected using Internet Mediated Research (IMR) via an Internet data collection tool. Overall, 85 questions including closed and open-ended questions were used to collect data on demographic variables, information on behaviour and attitudes (basic play, casino and poker play), player protection and satisfaction, responsible gambling and positive and negative aspects of Internet gambling. The content and wording of questions were developed from discussions involving both the research team (based on
emergent findings in past explanatory work) and the client.

Combined with lots of regular promotions, a lot of Texas Hold’em players come to Pacific Poker for juicy high-action tables and good bonuses.

The No-Limit and Pot-Limit cash games are strongly recommended for players looking to make a profit. At Pacific Poker’s Limit Hold’em games, the viewed-flop percentages in full ring games are often in the high 50s and 60s - sometimes even up in the 70s! The No-Limit games are also among the juiciest and loosest online. Special promotions offered by the site include money-added tournaments, satellites to live events and regular freerolls.

The upgraded Pacific Poker software offers players a lot: great graphics and functionality, improved search functions and layout, nice looking 3-D avatars, integrated casino and bingo play, an always-visible cashier and improved multi-tabling abilities - up to four tables can now be tiled or cascaded at one time.
