The state party’s slate mailer urged support of McCain and opposition to Issue 6, which would allow a casino in Clinton County, but the McCain campaign nixed the second part, according to an article in the Washington Times.

That’s because McCain generally supports legalized gambling, the article noted. (more…)

Online Gambling by Another Name?

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Would online gambling fare better if it simply went by “online predictive markets”?

Online “predictive markets” do not share the heat that is online gambling’s fortune. While online poker and the likes are in effect banned by US law, American politicians do not attack these websites.

The New York Times published an article by Paul McNamara of the IDG (International Date Group) that raised this issue. (more…)

Argentina Close to Banning Online Gambling

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Councilor Luis Alberto Mauri seeks to prohibit all forms of online gambling in Argentina so that citizens can only gamble in taxed gambling arenas.

Build up

Argentineans are about to face the wrath of the authorities regarding all forms of online gambling. The long-arm of the law has decided to put an end to all untaxed, unregistered online gambling activity. The latest unpopular bill to be proposed would effectively eliminate all online gambling. Councilor Luis Alberto Mauri wants all gambling Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block Argentineans from accessing their websites.

This is going to prove an unenviable challenge, given the country’s love of gambling activity.

Greater Control Lawmakers are quick to point out that they are all for regulated and taxable gambling activity, but not for the unregulated version. The targets of the new bill include: casino games, sports betting, poker and bingo. This is the only way for government to get a slice of the action, so they think. (more…)

India To Change Money Laundering Laws

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

In India, the Minister of State for Finance has tabled a bill in Parliament that would amend the nation’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002 and require money transfer providers to abide by mandatory reporting obligations.

If successful, Pawan Kumar Bansal’s bill would also see payment gateways such as Visa and MasterCard along with money changers and casinos come under the ambit of India’s money laundering laws.

Introduced in the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of Parliament, on Friday, the proposed bill introduces a new category of offence with cross-border implications for fighting terrorism while treating insider trading and market manipulation as laundering offences with stricter punishments. Offences related to human trafficking, piracy and environmental crimes along with over or under invoicing customs would also be punishable under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. (more…)

Does Sex Education Save Youth from Gambling?

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Can sexual education and better parenting skills lead to a drop in gambling trends for youths? Two writers seem to think so.

Baptist Standard newspaper unveiled an incensing article that while has some merit as far as statistics go and reports of studies, had some pretty strong opinions on youth gambling. One of them indicating that youths from age 14 to 21 must have started gambling because they may or may not have come from broken homes or were sexually active at an early age.

A compilation of studies were used as the basis of this article. (more…)

Holland has Hard time with Online Gambling

Monday, October 20th, 2008

They allow the smoking of marijuana in their parks, and hand out needles to drug addicts in their pharmacies, but apparently the Dutch are not so liberal with online gambling.

Who would have thought that Holland, out of all of the Europeans countries would be one to slap taxes onto online gambling operators? This is a result of directives from the new, expanded, and mighty European Union which has set a crusade against monopolies of this kind in their community.

Holland is now set to launch legislation that would post heavy taxes onto online gambling companies. This is not always a bad thing, provided the money is invested in the industry itself, but that is not the case here, where the taxes are considered to be punitive. It would appear that the Dutch just have a hard time with the gambling ethos. (more…)
