Game Over for Russian Casinos. Oh, Really?

After approximately two decades after the first casino started its business in Russia, Russian government has banned gambling across most of its territory forcing casino owners drive the industry underground. All casinos and slot-machine halls are outlawed from the day the ban has come into effect in June 2009. With the exception of four far-flung special zones, no gambling is now allowed across the Russian Federation.

An unjust and ill-thought out carpet ban on casinos has resulted in people seeking an alternative!

Some casino owners state that casinos will always exist and nothing can prevent them from functioning. The main idea is going underground. “This is complete nonsense. This ban will actually mean nothing. It is just a new push for corruption flourishing. Officials will turn a blind eye if you pay them enough,” one customer said.

Casino managers say the industry is likely to mutate. While big-rolling casinos are likely to stay shut, many slot-machine parlors will reinvent themselves as poker clubs or lottery halls – two forms of gambling not banned.

There is one more way for casino owners, which is legal and in many cases even more profitable. Many online gambling halls have chosen a way of going online. It is a common knowledge that online space is too difficult to control. Legislation for this sector is so vague and unclear that even in case of strict prohibition of online gambling it is too easy to find a number of back-stairs in legislation to run an online casino business on an absolutely legal basis. A great many of world jurisdictions issue licenses for online gambling. All that needs to be done is to open an offshore company in, say, Costa Rica or Malta to provide online gambling services almost worldwide. Since a gaming server is usually located in the country that has issued a license, the gamble game and money transactions formally take place in that country. And YES! This is the place where gambling is allowed. No law violation takes place, as you can understand.

As we all see, Russian ban on gambling has only triggered the boom of online gambling from one side and forced gambling halls owners to go underground. Nothing has really changed. So we would like to ask why?
