Korea Ministry Acts to Curb Online Gambling

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

The Ministry of Information and Communication announced yesterday it will toughen monitoring measures on online gambling.

The ministry said it will work with related government agencies, including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the National Police Agency and the Information and Communication Ethics Committee, in a crackdown on online gambling, which is illegal in Korea.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which recently revised the Game Industry Promotion Act to ban currency-trading websites, will toughen the Game Rating Board’s screening process when approving a game site, the Information Ministry said.

The National Police Agency recently reported that the number of online gambling sites that it asked the ethics committee to block surged to 291 as of late May from 76 last year.

“Illegal online gambling sites sign up members through a secret IP address at a specific time. And such sites are hard to find because they are increasingly good at evading IP tracking,” said Lee Tai-hee, director of the information safety team at the Information Ministry.

The ethics committee, which has authority to ask local network providers to block illegal websites, will request police to investigate three local online gambling sites and block 21 currency-trading game sites that were recently uncovered, the Information Ministry said.

BILOXI — Harold Diddlemeyer, who spent almost 40 years behind bars and proclaiming his innocence in the murder of a Biloxi gambler, has died. He was 64.

Diddlemeyer was convicted in 1969 for murdering Harry Bennett, a man who was well known among gamblers long before legalized gaming brought flashy casinos to the Mississippi coast.

Diddlemeyer had battled emphysema and cancer for the last several years and died Friday. The death brought mixed emotions for family members who claim Diddlemeyer was an innocent man. (more…)

No from Yahoo and Google to Online Gambling Ads

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Online search engines are caught in an ironic situation. News reports are stating that Google is not accepting paid search ads for online gambling companies, and that Yahoo has followed suit. Yet if you create hard-core pornography, you can easily buy paid advertisement on the world’s largest online search engines.

The search engines and the online gambling industries are growing so rapidly, executives in these companies are finding it hard to set a logical moral code, creating some bizarre contradictions. (more…)

France: a Former Chief Executive of 888 Interview is Required

Friday, April 6th, 2007

Online gambling company 888 has been under fire in the last week, as reports emerged that French authorities want to interview its former chief executive John Anderson.

In stark contrast with the general move throughout the European Union to regulation of the online gambling industry, France has stubbornly held on to its monopolistic view of the situation. Last year, French police arrested visiting BWin executives who were in France to promote a sponsorship deal with the AS Monaco football club. The French gambling authorities want to protect the state monopoly of online gambling services, and appear to be determined to aggressively pursue online gambling companies that advertise or do business in France. Breaking News: World Trade Organization Rules UIGEA is Illegal!!!

Friday, April 6th, 2007

March 30th Bloomberg reported that the World Trade Organization (WTO) had ruled the US ban on offshore internet gambling to be in breach of international trade law, leading to many online gambling investors to believe their shares will rocket upwards on Monday when the market reopens.

The WTO said the US ignored its previous ruling that challenged the US ban on payments to gambling web sites whilst allowing bets on its own soil, deeming the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) to be a protectionist practice and therefore illegal under WTO rules. (more…)

Europe: Progress in Gambling Regulation Coming Soon

Friday, April 6th, 2007

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) was launched in Brussels this week, replacing the European Betting Association (EBA).

The EGBA has been launched with some big names participating, including online gambling giants PartyGaming, Unibet, Interwetten, Expekt, Carmen Media Group, BWin and Bet-at-Home.

The EGBA would like to become a strong voice in the European debates regarding the rights of regulated European-licensed operators to offer their services unrestricted in Europe. They are launched on a wave of optimism, following the recent European Court of Justice decision on the Plancania case in Italy, where the ECJ ruled that a bookmaker licensed in Britain should be River Belle Casino allowed to offer their services in other EU countries without needing supplementary licenses.
