Internet gambling death in China

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

A 30 year old man died in an internet cafe in Guanzhou, China, due to what state run media reports as excessive internet gaming. After playing for three days solid, the man collapsed and died in front of over 100 other internet surfers.

Paramedics failed to resuscitate the man who the Beijing News state collapsed from exhaustion on Saturday after his three day binge. He was declared dead on the premises. This is the first death linked directly to internet gaming to have been officially recorded.

This tragic event highlights the dangers of both gaming and internet addiction. It is reported that China has over 142 million internet users, which is second only to the USA. The average time spent on the internet in China is increasing by an estimated 30% per year, and this trend is reflected globally.

The effects of the internet and online gaming is being researched and investigated by charities and organisations such as GamCare and eCogra. Online gaming companies are certainly implementing more preventative measures and focusing on being certificated by regulatory bodies.

So this means that internet gaming companies are taking a more serious look into social responsibility. But when tragedies like this can happen, can this be considered enough?

July 4th, 2007, Viaden Media became a full member of International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Viaden Media, member of W3C and a High Technologies Park of Belarus, is the first and the only Belarusian company-member of ICC.

ICC is the most influential, popular and trustworthy international non-governmental organization that works to promote and support global trade and globalization processes. ICC membership groups thousands of companies, such as British American Tabacco, IBM, Mitsubishi, Occidental Petroleum, Pirelli, Pfizer, Shell, Thomas Cook, etc., of every size in over 130 countries worldwide. They represent a broad cross-section of business activity including manufacturing, trade, services and the professions. Through membership of ICC, companies shape rules and policies that stimulate international trade and investment. These companies in turn count on the prestige and expertise of ICC to get business views across to governments and intergovernmental organizations, such as WTO, U.N.O. and others, whose decisions affect corporate finances and operations worldwide. ICC has direct access to national governments worldwide through its national committees among others, making helpful suggestions on how to create the most favourable climate for international business development.

ICC contributes significantly by creating a wide range of documents to control activity in all economic spheres. Incoterms, standard trade definitions most commonly used in international sales contracts, can be considered the brightest example of ICC activity. A significant function of the International Chamber of Commerce is also the preparation and promotion of its Uniform Customs and Practice Documentary Credits (UCP), a set of rules on the issuance and use of letters of credit. The UCP has substantially universal effect. Devised and published by the International Chamber of Commerce, Incoterms, UCP along with other ICC rules are at the heart of world trade.

International Chamber of Commerce also serves as an advocate of world business in the global economy. The ICC International Court of Arbitration is the most respected service of its kind in the world. Its voluntary rule-writing for business spreads best practice in areas as varied as banking, marketing, anti-corruption and environmental management. Their policy-making and advocacy work keeps national governments, the United Nations system and other global bodies apprised of the views of the world business on some of the most pressing issues of the day. Gambling City Macau

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Macau is rapidly transforming itself into a jewel of Asia by abandoning its image of a sleazy gambling mecca for something more wholesome. Consultant Ben Lee says competition is the driving force. “Since Stanley Ho’s 40-year casino monopoly was broken, the number of licenses to operate casinos has increased to three,” he said. “But since Macau allows sublicenses, or licenses sold to third parties, the actual number of casino licenses has increased to six.” That, he says, triggered heated competition among casino owners, and as a result, Macau’s gambling revenue has outstripped Las Vegas’ in just three years.

US to Face Seven Compensations: to be continued

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Following its decision to withdraw previously agreed to online gambling commitments, the United States will face seven compensation claims from World Trade Organization members, under WTO rules.

The Casino City Times news website reported this morning that official claims had been lodged by Antigua and Barbuda, the European Union, India, Costa Rica, Canada, Macau and Australia. The claims have been made in response to the US deciding to exclude online gambling from its 1995 General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) schedule, after losing their appeal over a WTO decision after Antigua claimed the US had broken their agreement in regards to online gambling. EU Against Gambling Monopolies

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

The European Commission will this week officially censure France, Sweden and Greece over their protectionist policies to relating to gambling, the Online-Casinos website reported today.

Last year, the EC initiated infringement proceedings under Article 226 of the Treaty on European Union against seven EU member states over concern their policies towards the gambling industry were protectionist in nature. The EU member states being investigated by the EC all had state-sponsored gambling monopolies whilst at the same time preventing privately-owned gambling companies from operating freely. This is a clear violation of EU rules governing the free movement of trades and services.

The EC CasinoRoom $100 bonus has made their position abundantly clear: as an EU member state, you do not have to allow gambling in your country, but you cannot run a state gambling monopoly and prevent other European gambling companies from providing competition.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has already ruled in favor of a private bookmaking company operating in Italy without an Italian license. However, the men had a UK gambling license, and the ECJ ruled their prosecution by Italian police was not compatible with EU laws.

The ECJ could be where France, Sweden and Greece eventually end up if they ignore this week’s European Commission warning. The Online-Casinos source said the EC will be given final warnings to Paris and Stockholm on Wednesday before taking them to the European Court of Justice.

The EC also has proceedings underway against Austria, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Italy and Finland.

With the EC on the warpath against countries who appear willing to thumb their noses at EU free trade laws, state-sponsored gambling monopolies in Europe appear to have only a limited lifespan.
