Mahjong Rules

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Mahjong (also called mah-jongg by the American association, Traditional Chinese: 麻將; Pinyin: májiàng) is a game for four players that originated in China. Mahjong involves skill, strategy, and calculation, as well as a certain degree of chance. Depending on the variation which is played, luck can be anything from a minor to a dominant factor in success. In Asia, mahjong is also popularly played as a gambling game. In the game, each player is dealt either thirteen or sixteen tiles in a hand (depending on the variation being played). On their turn, players draw a tile and discard one, with the goal of making four or five melds (also depending on the variation) and one pair, or “head”. Winning comes “on the draw”, by drawing a new or discarded tile that completes the hand. Thus a winning hand actually contains fourteen (or seventeen) tiles.

Object of the Game

The object is to collect a set of fourteen tiles grouped into four melds of three tiles each and a matched pair. The melds can be either three identical tiles, known as a Pung, or a straight of three tiles of one suit marked with consecutive numbers, known as a Chow. (Actually, sets of four identical tiles, known as a Kong, can also be used to make up the melds, but they’re described in more detail below, as they’re more complicated.) (more…)

How to Master Video Poker

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Many people incorrectly relate video poker to slot machines, believing that winning is based on no more than the luck of the draw. While it is true that luck does play a major part in video poker, much of the result is based in skill, logic, and your decisions. By using an optimal strategy and betting the maximum amount, you are likely to receive returns of approximately 100%, and sometimes even more.

Step One

Follow these general guidelines:
This system works because it is based on the fact that you are the only player competing, and there is no way to bluff or card count.

When you have: Draw:
Nothing of value 5 new cards
1 high card 4 new cards
1 pair or 2 high cards 3 new cards
3 of a kind, or 2 cards less than a straight flush or higher 2 new cards
2 pairs, or q card less than an open ended straight or higher 1 new card
Straight or higher No new cards

Step Two

Follow a system:
This strategy works by matching your hand to the highest possible value combination. Basically, you are required to determine what to keep and discard according to a ranking of the hands that are considered more likely to win. Simply look at the cards you hold – your aim is to match them to the highest hand ranking appearing on the chart that you can.
1. Full house or better
2. 4 to a royal flush
3. Straight, three of a kind, or flush
4. 4 to a straight flush
5. Two pair
6. High pair
7. 3 to a royal flush
8. 4 to a flush
9. Low pair
10. 4 to an outside straight
11. 2 suited high cards
12. 3 to a straight flush
13. 2 unsuited high cards (if more than 2 pick then pick lowest 2)
14. Suited 10/J, 10/Q, or 10/K
15. One high card
16. Discard everything

For example, if you hold a 4 of clubs, 5 of spades, 6 of diamonds, 7 of spades, and 7 of hearts: although it seems as though 4 to an outside straight may be our best way to play (#10), the chart shows that a low pair (#9) is the smarter way to play and has a better chance of winning, because it lies one rank higher.

Tips & Warnings

1. When playing Deuces Wild, the 1st strategy holds an exception: if you are holding 4 of a kind and the remaining card is of no value, you have a better chance of winning by dropping it.

2. The 2nd strategy is only relevant for 9/6 Jacks or Better.

Monday, July 28th, 2008

UNLV study finds online betting areas thick with bullying, foul-mouthed players, repelling some, enticing others. These were the shocking results discovered following 90-minute interviews with 30 Las Vegas gamblers who enjoy playing poker online.

The experience can be a negative environment dominated by bullying, foul-mouthed players who prowl gambling chat rooms, writes Liz Benston of the Las Vegas Sun.

Donna – participants’ last names were withheld by researchers to protect their identities – reported being harassed while gambling online, including by one player who stalked her by phone. Casino War Game Rules

Monday, April 14th, 2008

If you think you don’t know how to play Casino War, then you’re wrong. You most likely played it many times as a kid and it’s one of the easiest casino card games to learn.

Casino War is one of a few new breed casino games to become more and more popular over the past few years. And here at Jackpot we’ve been trying to work out why and still don’t have an answer for you! If we were to describe Casino War with one word it would be BORING!
Take an old children’s game, put it on a blackjack table, dress it up with a dodgy proposition bet, and you’ve got yourself Casino War, one of the newest and most pointless table games ever invented by man!
You make a wager, usually £1-£5. The dealer gives you one card face up and gives himself one card up. If your card is higher than the dealer’s card, you win. If it’s not, you lose, it’s that simple. The casino has absolutely no advantage on this portion of the game and, as you might imagine, the battles or wars are about as interesting. If you like playing rocks-paper-scissors for kicks, Casino War could be your game.
Casino War also includes a tie bet which pays 10-1 and has an almost unreal 18.65% advantage for the house. At all costs ignore this bet!

Casino War House Advantage

Go to war on ties: 2.88%
Surrender on ties: 3.7%
Bet on ties: 18.65%
If your initial altercation with the dealer results in a tie, you may either surrender your bet or go to war, in which case you must post another bet equal to your first. The dealer will then post a chip, this looks like he’s matching your second bet. He isn’t, he is simply matching your first bet. So in reality you’re betting two chips to win one every time you go to war. This is where the online casino really gets its house edge.
The best strategy is to never surrender always go to war. Surrendering gives the casino a big 3.7% advantage. Going to war reduces this to a more realistic 2.88%. And a quick reminder, never ever take the tie proposition!

For Beginners: Skill or Luck?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

There are two main types of casino games – casino games of luck and casino games of skill.
Some types of casino games require knowledge of the game (skill) and luck in order for the game outcome to be favourable to the player. Blackjack for example is one such game. Other casino games such as slot machines require absolutely no knowledge or skill whatsoever and rely totally on that thing that we all know and love, luck.
The only sure thing about luck is that it will change.
Bret Harte (1836 – 1902)

Veteran and professional gamblers tend only to play casino games that have a small house edge. Whereas novice players tend to play a range of games blissfully unaware of the house’s edge and its inevitable advantage.

We’ve compiled a list of some popular casino games below and categorised them as either ‘Skill’ based or ‘Luck’ based. (more…)

Video Poker Rules and Gambling Tips

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Video poker first made its entry in the casinos during the 1970s; today it’s one of the most popular forms of gambling both online and down the Vegas strip. For the player who like a game of skill, a low house edge, the possibility of large wins, and the anonymity of playing alone there is nothing else that can compare to video poker. In addition, you can also switch your bet from $0.25 to $5 a game without changing to another machine!

There are many variations of the game each with its own particular strategy but in general, the rules of video poker are simple; you play with 1 to 5 coins, the machine give you five cards, you choose which to hold and which to discard, the machine replaces your discards and pays you off according to the value of your hand.
